The Pope is a pretty good sport about most things, but he’s a real stickler when it comes to literary adaptations to film. Well, I guess I don’t know how much say the Pope really has when it comes to what does and does not get greenlit, but the Vatican has definitely put the kybosh on Angels & Demons shooting in any church in Rome.
A spokesman for the Vatican, Marco Fibbi, stated, "Usually we read the script but in this case it wasn't necessary. Just the name Dan Brown was enough." Well, at least they’re being open minded about it. Fibbi added, "Angels and Demons peddles a type of fantasy that damages our common religious beliefs, just like The Da Vinci Code did."
The production packed up and moved to Caserta. In place of the Vatican, what used to be the Royal Palace will serve as the film’s major location. The Vatican also boycotted the original film, The Da Vinci Code.
Is this a bad case of throwing the baby out with the bath water? Perhaps, though I suspect everyone employed at the Vatican already found the water pretty foul to begin with. Maybe they’ll be more lenient when Mel Gibson shows up to shoot a sequel to The Passion. Just kidding. I’m pretty sure there’s no sequel in the works.
