Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are a little ticked off at the John McCain campaign for using their 1977 hit, "Barracuda" as the theme for his Vice Presidential running mate Sarah Palin. Why would they use a song that’s about soulless executives? Irony rocks!
After the tune first played as a theme song for Palin, the band acted quickly and issued a statement asking the campaign to stop using the song. "We hope our wishes will be honored," the band said. Of course this was ignored, and the same song was pumped through the speaker system following McCain's speech on Thursday night.
After McCain’s speech, the Heart sisters e-mailed the following exclusive statement to EW:
"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there."
These politicians need to get a little more creative with their song choices. It would have been much more entertaining if Mrs. Palin finished her speech, ripped off all of her clothes and busted out some stripper moves to ‘March of the Pigs’ by Nine Inch Nails.
